In the swamps of Louisiana, bodies are turning up mutilated in ways that point to something far more dangerous than a native alligator. Medical investigator Sam Rivers is assigned to the case, and with biologist Mary Callahan he travels to the floating house where the victim lived, meeting the family and friends who remain there. What they find is a breed of large, genetically engineered fish, brought in illegally from Asia and now loose in the bayou, attacking people in the water and on land. As the residents try to survive and escape, a wealthy hunter named Jeff arrives with his own team, intent on tracking the creatures down.
