Brotherhood of the Wolf is set in eighteenth-century France, where a creature known as the Beast has been killing people in the province of Gévaudan, most of them women and children. King Louis XV sends Grégoire de Fronsac, a naturalist and knight, to identify and hunt the animal. He is accompanied by Mani, a Mohawk warrior he met in New France and regards as a blood brother. Their investigation brings them into contact with local figures, including a nobleman, a priest, a courtesan and a young aristocratic woman, and leads them toward secrets behind the attacks.
The film was directed by Christophe Gans, who wrote the screenplay with Stéphane Cabel, and it followed Necronomicon and Crying Freeman in his filmography. Samuel Le Bihan plays Fronsac, with Mark Dacascos as Mani, Vincent Cassel as Jean-François de Morangias, Émilie Dequenne as Marianne de Morangias, Monica Bellucci as Sylvia and Jérémie Renier as Thomas d'Apcher. It was produced by Samuel Hadida and Richard Grandpierre for Eskwad, StudioCanal, Canal+ and Davis Films.
Made for about 29 million dollars, the film took roughly 71 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. It holds a rating of 7 out of 10 on IMDb from 76,000 votes and 6.7 out of 10 on TMDB from 1,799 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 129 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
