Army of One

Gary Faulkner is an unemployed former convict and handyman living in Colorado who becomes convinced that God has instructed him to travel to Pakistan and capture Osama bin Laden. Armed with little more than a sword he bought from a home-shopping channel, he sets out on his mission, and his repeated attempts to reach his target bring him into contact with friends back home, new acquaintances in Pakistan, and CIA agents who take a dim view of his efforts. The story is based on the real Gary Faulkner, who made several journeys to the region in pursuit of bin Laden.

Larry Charles directed the film, his sixth feature after Masked and Anonymous, Borat, Religulous, Brüno and The Dictator. Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph wrote the screenplay, and Nicolas Cage plays Faulkner, with Wendi McLendon-Covey as Marci, Russell Brand as God, Rainn Wilson and Denis O'Hare as the agents Simons and Doss, and Paul Scheer as Pickles. The production was a co-production between the United States, Australia and Morocco.

Released in 2016, the comedy runs 93 minutes. Its critical reception was poor, with a film critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 12 reviews, and audiences were similarly unenthusiastic: it holds a rating of 5.2 out of 10 on IMDb from around 9,700 votes and the same score on TMDB from roughly 341 votes. The similarity between the two audience scores suggests a consistently muted response across viewer groups.
