The Fate of the Furious
Short description
The Fate of the Furious continues the long-running action series built around Dominic Toretto and his crew. After Dom and Letty marry, Brian and Mia step away from the team, and the remaining members see their records cleared, the group settles into something like ordinary life. That calm ends when a mysterious woman pulls Dom back into crime and turns him against the people closest to him. His friends, who have become a family, are forced to go after him and stop an anarchist bent on global chaos. The chase moves from the beaches of Cuba to the streets of New York and on to the frozen Barents Sea.
F. Gary Gray directed the film, the ninth in the series. It came after his 2015 release Straight Outta Compton and before Men in Black: International in 2019, and stands as the eighth feature he directed. Chris Morgan wrote the screenplay, with Michael Fottrell, Neal H. Moritz and Vin Diesel producing. Vin Diesel leads the cast as Dominic Toretto, joined by Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris, among a large credited group of actors and crew.
The production cost about 250 million dollars and took in roughly 1.24 billion dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 273,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from nearly 11,000. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 309 reviews sits slightly below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the race at the beginning of the film, Vin Diesel's character activates turbo mode, saying: "Well, Buster, now we'll find out if it works or not." The fact is that the idea of a "turbo for the poor" device was suggested to him by Brian O'Conner, whom Dominic's team always called Buster.
- One of the proposals during the project's development was to focus on street racing rather than special effects and large-scale action scenes, in order to honor the memory of Paul Walker.
- Charlize Theron's character is the first female main antagonist in the franchise.
- Director F. Gary Gray filmed and included a scene that had to be cut before release in the UK, otherwise the British Board of Film Classification would have given the film a "15" rating (for ages 15 and over; the film may contain strong language, harsh violence, sexual themes, and scenes of drug or alcohol use). Without this scene, the film received a "12A" rating (under 12s are only admitted with a parent).
- Scott Eastwood's character is never referred to by name. The actor's father, Clint Eastwood, played "the man with no name" in Sergio Leone’s (1929-1989) famous "Dollars Trilogy" – "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964), "For a Few Dollars More" (1965), and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (1966).
- In one of the film's episodes, Jason Statham's character calls Dwayne Johnson's hero Hercules. Johnson played the main role in Brett Ratner's blockbuster "Hercules" (2014).
- Dominic's son is named Brian in honor of Paul Walker, who played Brian O'Conner in previous films in the franchise. In 2015, Vin Diesel named his daughter Pauline, also in honor of Walker.
- Many of the events depicted in the film take place in New York, but filming there was almost nonexistent. Nearly all the action scenes were shot in Cleveland or Atlanta for the simple reason that any attempt to block off Manhattan's main streets for filming would have been a logistical nightmare.
- One of the key action episodes was filmed in Iceland in April 2016. It is considered the largest explosion scene ever filmed in the country.
- A conflict erupted between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel a week before the end of filming due to Diesel canceling some of the scenes planned with Johnson at the last minute.
- Vin Diesel and the producers dreamed of filming some racing scenes in Manila and contacted the relevant Philippine authorities for permission to close a significant section of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, known as EDSA, to traffic. The Filipinos did not grant permission, as closing the highway would have paralyzed traffic throughout the city.
- The director of "The Fate of the Furious" is F. Gary Gray. The list of candidates included Louis Leterrier, William Eubank, and Adam Wingard. Erickson Core, the cinematographer of the first "Fast and Furious" (2001) film, was even considered for the director's position.
- At the end of the film, the Shaw brothers infiltrate Cipher's plane, and Deckard makes a joke about Owen and planes. This refers to the 6th film in the franchise (2013), where Owen was the main antagonist and was thrown out of a plane.
- Hobbs and the footballers perform a traditional warrior dance of tribes living in the Pacific archipelagoes. Rugby players from New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, etc., perform it before every match.
- Brian O'Conner, played by Paul Walker, drove Japanese cars. Scott Eastwood, who replaced Walker, also drives Japanese cars (Subaru BRZ and Subaru Impreza WRX STi).
