Hell or High Water

Toby Howard is a divorced father of two struggling to keep his family's West Texas ranch, and his brother Tanner has just left prison. Facing foreclosure and the loss of their land, the two turn to bank robbery, targeting the same institutions that have been squeezing their family and neighbours for years. Their plan is to take enough money to settle the debts, but a veteran Texas Ranger named Marcus Hamilton and his partner Alberto Parker begin working the case, and giving up is not something either brother will consider.

David Mackenzie directed the film, which followed Starred Up in his filmography and was written by Taylor Sheridan. Jeff Bridges plays Marcus, with Chris Pine as Toby, Ben Foster as Tanner, Gil Birmingham as Alberto and Marin Ireland as Debbie. Sidney Kimmel, Peter Berg and Julie Yorn produced.

Made for about 12 million dollars, the film took roughly 38 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from around 276,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.3 from about 5,000 votes. A critics' rating of 8.5 from 286 reviews sits above both audience scores, the kind of gap that points to strong professional approval alongside solid, if slightly more reserved, viewer response.
