Short description
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald continues the story begun in its 2016 predecessor. The dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald escapes custody and gathers followers, most of whom do not know his real aim of raising wizards above non-magical beings. Albus Dumbledore, once close to Grindelwald, cannot confront him alone, so he turns to his former student Newt Scamander. Newt agrees to help without knowing what awaits, and the mission brings him back together with Tina, Queenie and Jacob as loyalties are tested in a wizarding world increasingly divided.
David Yates directed, following the earlier Fantastic Beasts film among the Harry Potter films he had already made. J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay and produced with Steve Kloves and David Heyman. Eddie Redmayne returns as Newt, with Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler and Alison Sudol, while Johnny Depp plays Grindelwald and Jude Law appears as Dumbledore. The production was large, with a budget of 200 million USD, and it took 655 million USD worldwide. Audience ratings sit at 6.5/10 on IMDb from over 331,000 votes and 6.8/10 on TMDB, while the critics' rating of 5.3/10 from 336 reviews is lower than both.
What's left behind the scenes
- Johnny Depp agreed to participate in the film without even reading the script. The actor stated that he has long been and remains a devoted fan of J.K. Rowling's works.
- During preparation for the role of Dumbledore, Jude Law had a lengthy meeting with J.K. Rowling, during which she provided him with information about the character that no one else knew. In addition, Law studied the character in the 'Potter' films as performed by Michael Gambon.
- Hogwarts' exterior was filmed at Lacock Abbey, built in 1229. It is located in the ceremonial county of Wiltshire. Hogwarts was also filmed there in the first films of the 'Harry Potter' franchise.
- The role of Nagini was initially offered to Indonesian actress Acha Septriasa, as, according to J.K. Rowling, the character was inspired by motifs from Indonesian folklore. The actress declined the offer as she was expecting a child.
- The filming of the movie and the script itself were shrouded in the strictest secrecy, so the crew used code names to refer to the characters.
- The film was shot almost exclusively at the Warner Bros. studio in Hertfordshire, nearly 30 kilometers from London.
- Nicolas, or Nicholas Flamel (1330-1418) was a public scribe and bookstore owner. This alchemist is credited with obtaining the Philosopher's Stone and the elixir of life. His name is mentioned in many books.
