Three... Extremes

Three... Extremes is an Asian horror anthology made up of three separate short films by three directors from different countries. Fruit Chan's segment, Dumplings, follows a woman so troubled by aging that she turns to a mysterious cook whose special dumplings are said to restore youth. Takashi Miike's segment, Box, centres on a writer haunted by her past and by the memory of her twin sister. Park Chan-wook's segment, Cut, concerns a successful film director who is taken captive in his own home by a resentful extra, who forces him into an impossible choice involving his wife. The three stories are unconnected, each with its own cast and setting.

Park directed Cut and also co-wrote the screenplay with Lilian Lee and Haruko Fukushima. The film sits between his Oldboy and Lady Vengeance in a run that also includes Joint Security Area, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and, later, Thirst and The Handmaiden. For Miike it came after Yakuza Demon and before Izo, while for Chan it preceded his feature-length expansion of Dumplings. The cast includes Kyoko Hasegawa, Atsuro Watabe and Bai Ling.

Released in 2004, the film runs 125 minutes and was a co-production involving companies in Korea, Japan and Hong Kong. On IMDb it holds a 6.9 rating from roughly 22,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.8 from around 428 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 from 60 reviews places it close to the audience scores on both sites.
