Loving

Loving is a drama based on the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, a white man and a Black woman who married in Virginia in 1958, when interracial marriage was illegal there. Arrested after their wedding, they were given a suspended prison sentence on the condition that they leave the state. Rather than accept the arrangement, the couple spent years challenging the ruling in court, a legal fight that eventually reached the United States Supreme Court.

Jeff Nichols directed the film and wrote the screenplay, placing it between his earlier features Take Shelter and Mud and his later work. Joel Edgerton plays Richard Loving and Ruth Negga plays Mildred Loving, with Michael Shannon, Marton Csokas, Nick Kroll and Bill Camp among the supporting cast. Peter Saraf, Marc Turtletaub and Colin Firth served as producers.

Made for about 9 million dollars, the film returned roughly 13 million worldwide, a modest result for a release in wide circulation. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 38,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 out of 10 from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 7.7 out of 10 from 294 reviews is higher than both audience scores, indicating stronger approval among reviewers than among general viewers.
