Pilgrimage

Pilgrimage is set in thirteenth-century Ireland, where a small community of monks lives in relative seclusion on a remote coast. Their routine is disrupted by the arrival of a Cistercian brother carrying orders from Rome: the monastery's most sacred relic, a stone linked to the martyrdom of Saint Matthias, must be delivered to the Holy See. Reluctantly, the monks set out eastward across an island divided by long-running clan warfare and the expanding reach of Norman invaders, accompanied by a young novice, a mute lay brother with a violent history, and a Norman knight. As the journey continues, the true value of the relic becomes clear, and the faith that holds the group together begins to threaten it.

Brendan Muldowney directed the film from a screenplay by Jamie Hannigan, following his earlier feature Love Eternal; his later films include The Cellar and One Last Deal. Tom Holland plays the novice Brother Diarmuid, with Richard Armitage as Raymond De Merville, Jon Bernthal as the mute brother, Stanley Weber as the Cistercian Brother Geraldus, John Lynch as the herbalist Brother Ciaran and Eric Godon as Baron de Merville. Produced by Conor Barry, John Keville and Benoît Roland for Savage Productions and Wrong Men, the film cost about 5 million USD. It runs 96 minutes and holds a 5.9 rating on IMDb from roughly 7,300 votes and a 6.0 on TMDB from about 312 votes, while a critics' rating of 6.4 from 40 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
