Joan Castleman has spent four decades supporting her husband Joe, a celebrated New York novelist, while setting aside her own ambitions. When Joe learns he has won the Nobel Prize in Literature, the couple travels to Stockholm for the ceremony, joined on the trip by their son David and by Nathaniel Bone, a journalist who has long wanted to write Joe's biography and who has been refused by the family before. During the journey, Joan begins to re-examine the marriage and the choices she has made, and the long-hidden arrangement behind Joe's success comes under pressure.
The film is a drama directed by Björn Runge from a screenplay by Jane Anderson, and it was released in 2017. Glenn Close plays Joan and Jonathan Pryce plays Joe, with Christian Slater as Bone, Max Irons as David, and Harry Lloyd and Annie Starke as the younger Joe and Joan in flashbacks. It was produced by Meta Louise Foldager, Piers Tempest and Rosalie Swedlin, and was made as a co-production involving the United Kingdom, the United States, Switzerland and Sweden.
On a budget of about 7 million dollars, the film took roughly 20 million dollars at the worldwide box office. It is rated 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb from around 45,000 votes and 7.1 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes, while critics gave it 7.2 out of 10.
