Employees of the Belko corporation arrive at their office tower outside Bogotá for what seems like an ordinary workday, only for the local staff to be sent home and the building sealed off. A voice over the public address system informs the roughly eighty remaining American expatriates that they are taking part in an experiment and must kill one another, or die themselves through devices implanted in their bodies. As the group divides over how to respond, office manager Mike Milch tries to keep people alive while company head Barry Norris pushes a more ruthless course. The film is set almost entirely inside the building, and the pressure on the colleagues escalates as the voice continues to issue demands.
The Belko Experiment was directed by Greg McLean, his fifth feature after Wolf Creek, Rogue, Wolf Creek 2 and The Darkness, from a screenplay by James Gunn, who produced with Peter Safran. John Gallagher Jr. and Tony Goldwyn lead a large ensemble that also includes Adria Arjona, John C. McGinley, Melonie Diaz and Michael Rooker. Made for about five million dollars, it took in roughly twelve million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 6.1 from some 56,600 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 from about 1,700 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.6 from 108 reviews, so audiences and critics landed in similar territory.
