Short description
Fifty Shades Darker continues the story of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, who parted at the end of the previous film. Anastasia, now working in publishing, has ended the relationship because of Christian's controlling demands, yet neither can let the other go. When Christian asks for another chance, she sets her own terms for a new arrangement. As the two try to build something more stable, figures from his past reappear and threaten what they are attempting, and Anastasia learns more about the troubled history behind his behavior. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan return in the lead roles, with Eric Johnson, Eloise Mumford, Bella Heathcote and Rita Ora among the cast. Niall Leonard wrote the screenplay.
James Foley directed, taking over the series from Sam Taylor-Johnson. The film sits between his earlier features, from At Close Range and Glengarry Glen Ross through to Perfect Stranger, and Fifty Shades Freed, which followed in 2018. It is an adaptation of the second novel in E. L. James's trilogy.
Made for about 55 million dollars, the film took roughly 382 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget despite poor reviews; critics rated it 3.3 out of 10 across 208 reviews. Audiences were more divided than dismissive: on IMDb it holds 4.6 out of 10 from around 121,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 out of 10 from about 8,000 votes.
