Breath is set in a small coastal town in Western Australia in the 1970s, where two teenage boys, Pikelet and Loonie, drift through the quiet routines of their surroundings. Their friendship takes a new direction when they meet Sando, an older and more experienced surfer who begins teaching them to ride the waves. Under his guidance the boys push themselves further, drawn into a world of risk and physical challenge that shapes them in lasting ways. The film is based on Tim Winton's novel, and Winton co-wrote the screenplay with Gerard Lee and Simon Baker.
Baker directed the film as well as playing Sando, his feature directing debut. Samson Coulter and Ben Spence appear as the two boys, with Elizabeth Debicki, Richard Roxburgh and Rachael Blake in supporting roles. Made across Australian, British, Canadian and American production companies, it took about 3 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 6.7/10 from around 4,300 votes, and on TMDB 6.6/10 from 93 votes. The critics' rating stands at 6.6/10 from 49 reviews, placing it close to the audience scores, suggesting a film received with moderate appreciation from both sides. The limited vote counts hint at a modest international footprint.
