Jessie and her husband Gerald travel to an isolated lake house in Maine hoping to revive their marriage. Gerald handcuffs Jessie to the bed as part of a consensual sex game, but when she asks him to stop, he refuses, and moments later he dies suddenly, leaving her trapped and alone with no one nearby to help. What follows is a struggle to survive and escape, complicated by unsettling visions and memories that surface as her isolation wears on.
The film is directed by Mike Flanagan, who wrote the screenplay with Jeff Howard, and it sits between Ouija: Origin of Evil and Doctor Sleep in his filmography. Carla Gugino plays Jessie and Bruce Greenwood plays Gerald, with Carel Struycken, Chiara Aurelia, Henry Thomas and Kate Siegel among the supporting cast.
Released in 2017, the film runs 104 minutes. Its reception divides sharply by audience: on IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from around 141,000 votes, and on TMDB it has 6.4/10 from roughly 4,000 votes, both middling scores. A film critics' rating of 7.6/10 from 81 reviews places it noticeably higher among reviewers than among general viewers, suggesting the adaptation drew more appreciation for its craft than broad enthusiasm from the wider audience.
