Rupture

Renee is a single mother living with her twelve-year-old son Evan in a quiet suburban neighbourhood. She has a severe fear of spiders, and neither she nor her son realises that they are being watched. When her car breaks down, she is taken by a group of strangers and wakes up restrained in a laboratory. There, her captors question her about her medical history and her phobia while subjecting her and other prisoners to tests, and she comes to understand that she was chosen for a reason and that something about her own nature is not human.

The film is a science fiction thriller directed by Steven Shainberg, his third feature after Secretary (2002) and Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006), from a screenplay by Brian Nelson. Noomi Rapace plays Renee, with Peter Stormare, Kerry Bishé, Lesley Manville, Michael Chiklis and Ari Millen among the supporting cast. It was produced by Andrew Lazar, Shainberg and Christina Weiss Lurie, with backing from companies in Canada and the United States, and runs 102 minutes.

On TMDB it holds a rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 298 votes, which places it below the reception usually associated with Shainberg's earlier work. The premise of a mother isolated and examined by an unfeeling organisation is played as suspense rather than action, with the emphasis on Renee's attempts to work out who has taken her and why she was singled out.
