Short description

A young woman named Michelle leaves New Orleans after an argument and drives through the night. A severe crash on a quiet road leaves her unconscious, and she wakes not in a hospital but in an underground bunker. The man who built it, Howard, insists he pulled her from the wreckage and that a chemical attack has made the surface unlivable, with most of the population already dead. Unsure whether to believe him, Michelle finds herself sharing the confined space with Howard and another man, Emmett, and begins to plan a way out, even without knowing what waits above.

10 Cloverfield Lane was released in 2016 and marked the feature directing debut of Dan Trachtenberg, who went on to make Prey and later Predator films. Damien Chazelle, Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken wrote the screenplay, and J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber produced through Bad Robot. John Goodman plays Howard, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Michelle, John Gallagher Jr. as Emmett, and Bradley Cooper providing a voice. Made for about 15 million dollars, it took in roughly 110 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget.

On IMDb the film holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 382,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7 out of 10 from nearly 9,000 votes. A critics' score of 7.6 out of 10 from 320 reviews places it slightly above what general audiences gave it.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Mary Elizabeth Winstead was the only actress the filmmakers wanted to see in the role of Michelle.
  • In the store window, you can see the 'Slusho' cocktail, which first appeared in Matt Reeves' thriller 'Cloverfield' (2008).
  • During filming, the actors (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and others) were not told the film's title, keeping it secret until the very end.
  • The film features a printed form with the inscriptions "Bold Futura" and "Tagruato Inc." This refers to the film's advertising campaign, as well as Matt Reeves' film "Cloverfield" (2008). "SLUSHO!" and "Bold Futura" are divisions of the fictional company "Tagruato." In that film, Howard works with satellites for "Bold Futura," while Rob is heading to Japan to take a position as vice president of marketing at "SLUSHO!"
  • In one episode, a character played by John Goodman is watching Howard Deutch's film "Pretty in Pink" (1986) on television, where the character played by Molly Ringwald designs and sews her own dresses as a hobby. In "10 Cloverfield Lane," the character played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead also dreams of becoming a designer.
  • The plotline about someone being held in a bunker because the air outside is contaminated was used in the second season of the TV series "Lost" (2004-2010). In both cases, the person offering this false explanation dies in a confrontation with the person they were trying to convince of its truth. J.J. Abrams was a producer on both "Lost" and "10 Cloverfield Lane."
  • In one scene in the film, Michelle, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, crawls through an air duct while wearing a white tank top. This is similar to a scene from John McTiernan's film "Die Hard" (1988), where the main character, John McClane, played by Bruce Willis, also crawls through an air duct. In "Live Free or Die Hard" (2007), Mary Elizabeth Winstead played McClane's daughter, Lucy.
  • During filming, the actors were not told the title of the film, keeping it secret until the very end.
  • The existence of the film and its upcoming release became known less than two months before its release. The film was shot in complete secrecy, and the first trailer was released during the premiere of Michael Bay's "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi" on January 14, 2016. Matt Reeves also shot "Cloverfield" (2008) in strict secrecy, and the first trailer was released before the screening of "Transformers" (2007), also directed by Michael Bay.
  • A Slusho cocktail, first appearing in "Cloverfield", can be seen in a shop window.
  • A script called "The Basement" had nothing to do with the "Cloverfield" universe. It was later renamed "Valencia," and then JJ Abrams' company Bad Robot acquired the script and reworked it.
  • Michelle's phone is connected to the BRT communication network. This is an abbreviation for Bad Robot, J.J. Abrams' company.
  • Michelle stops to get gas at a 'Kelvin' station. This is an 'Easter egg' that producer J.J. Abrams inserts into all the projects he is involved in. In this way, he pays tribute to his grandfather, Henry Kelvin, an electronics company owner who had a huge influence on Abrams as a child.
  • The film shows a printed form with the names Bold Futura and Tagruato Inc. SLUSHO! and Bold Futura are divisions of the fictional company Tagruato. Howard works with satellites for Bold Futura, while Rob from 'Cloverfield' is heading to Japan, where he awaits a position as Vice President of Marketing at SLUSHO!
  • The plotline involving someone being kept in a bunker because the air outside is contaminated was used in the second season of the TV series 'Lost'. In both cases, the person offering this false explanation dies in a clash with the person they were trying to convince. J.J. Abrams served as a producer for both the series 'Lost' and the film '10 Cloverfield Lane'.
