Merantau

Yuda has trained in the Indonesian martial art of Silat Harimau in his village in West Sumatra, and he is preparing for his merantau, a traditional rite of passage in which young men leave home to make their way in the wider world. He travels to Jakarta, expecting to teach silat, but the life he finds there is harsher than the one he left behind. After a series of setbacks leave him without a home or a clear future, a chance encounter draws him into the path of Astri, a young woman, and her younger brother Adit. Astri has become a target of a criminal group led by Ratger, and Yuda chooses to intervene.

The film is the feature debut of director Gareth Evans, who also wrote the screenplay. It came before The Raid, The Raid 2, Apostle and Havoc in his filmography, and it introduced the collaboration between Evans and lead actor Iko Uwais. Uwais plays Yuda, with Chika Jessica as Astri, Christine Hakim as Wulan, Mads Koudal as Ratger, Yusuf Aulia as Adit and Alex Abbad as Johni. Ario Sagantoro produced, and the film was made as a co-production between Indonesia and Hong Kong.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from around 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.5 from roughly 250 votes. The larger vote count on IMDb, alongside the smaller one on TMDB, suggests a modest but established following for a debut action feature.
