Wilson
Short description
Wilson is a middle-aged, divorced man living alone with his dog. Lonely and set in his ways, he decides to track down his ex-wife after his father dies, hoping to rebuild a connection with her. In doing so, he learns that the marriage produced a teenage daughter, Claire, whom he never knew about because she was placed for adoption as a baby. Wilson sets out to bring the three of them together as a family, though the reunion proves far messier than he imagines.
The film is a comedy-drama from director Craig Johnson, whose second feature it is, following The Skeleton Twins and preceding Alex Strangelove and The Parenting. Daniel Clowes wrote the screenplay, and Woody Harrelson plays Wilson, with Laura Dern as his ex-wife Pippi and Isabella Amara as Claire; Judy Greer, Cheryl Hines and Mary Lynn Rajskub appear among a credited cast of 55.
Released in March 2017, the film runs 94 minutes. Audience response was mixed: it holds a 5.9 out of 10 on IMDb from around 11,000 votes and a 6 out of 10 on TMDB from 388 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 131 reviews places reviewers slightly below the general audience.
What's left behind the scenes
- Some scenes were filmed in an active prison in Stillwater. This is the capital of the state of Minnesota and the administrative center of Ramsey County. During filming, Woody Harrelson requested that the air conditioning be turned off, but he was denied due to the inconvenience it would cause the guards and inmates.
- Director Derek Cianfrance was involved with the project for some time, but then he left it to film the historical romantic drama "The Light Between Oceans" (2016).
