Thank You for Your Service

Three American soldiers come home to Kansas after serving in Iraq. They are treated as heroes, but ordinary life no longer fits: family, work and the quiet of home all feel distant, and memories of what happened during their deployment follow them everywhere. Adam, Will and Solo each carry guilt over a comrade killed and another badly wounded in an attack. One of them takes his own life, and the others are left to face their trauma, hiding it from their wives while trying to find help. The veterans hospitals are overcrowded, and the path back turns out to run through finally speaking about what they saw and what they feel responsible for.

The film is Jason Hall's directorial debut, following his work as a screenwriter, and he also wrote the screenplay. It is based on the nonfiction book by journalist David Finkel about post-traumatic stress among veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Jon Kilik produced, and the cast is led by Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, Joe Cole, Beulah Koale, Amy Schumer and Scott Haze, with twenty credited cast members and eighty-one credited crew.

Made for about 20 million dollars, the film returned roughly 10 million worldwide. Its critical reception was moderate, at 6.8 out of 10 from 113 reviews, placing it somewhat above the audience scores: 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb from over 15,000 votes and the same 6.6 out of 10 on TMDB, from a much smaller pool of 428 votes.
