In April 1980, a group of armed men storm the Iranian embassy in London and seize everyone inside as hostages. What follows is a six-day standoff, with negotiations dragging on while British authorities weigh whether to send in a specialist military unit to end the siege. Among those caught up in the crisis are a soldier in the SAS, a police negotiator, a journalist covering the events and a government minister facing pressure to act.

The film is a British and New Zealand co-production directed by Toa Fraser, working from a screenplay by Glenn Standring and produced by Matthew Metcalfe. It was Fraser's second feature, following his 2006 debut No. 2. The cast is led by Jamie Bell, Mark Strong, Abbie Cornish, Martin Shaw, Tim Pigott-Smith and Ben Turner, with 56 credited performers in total.
