Predators
Short description
Predators follows a group of killers who wake up on an unfamiliar planet with no memory of how they arrived. Among them are a mercenary, a doctor, a sniper, a convict and a Russian soldier, most of them hardened professionals who have spent their lives hunting others. They soon discover that they have been brought there as game, and that something is stalking them through the jungle.
Nimród Antal directed the film, which came fifth in his directing career after Insurance, Kontroll, Vacancy and Armored. Alex Litvak and Michael Finch wrote the screenplay, and Robert Rodriguez produced through Troublemaker Studios alongside John Davis and Elizabeth Avellan. Adrien Brody leads as Royce, with Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Oleg Taktarov and Laurence Fishburne in supporting roles.
Made for 40 million dollars, the film took in about 127 million dollars worldwide, a solid return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 262,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from about 4,790 votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 from 202 reviews places it close to the audience scores, so viewers and reviewers largely landed in the same place on this one.
What's left behind the scenes
- Robert Rodriguez wrote several scripts for "Predator 3" as early as 1994. However, after the disappointing box office performance of "Predator 2" (1990), as well as the fact that the threequel would require a significant budget, the project was never realized. According to Rodriguez, many elements of his early scripts were incorporated into "Predators".
- Initially, Robert Rodriguez considered directing the film, but then decided to limit himself to screenwriting and producing roles.
- Neil Marshall, Michael J. Bassett, and Bill Duke were considered for the director's position.
- Darren Lynn Bousman and Marcus Nispel expressed interest in directing the film.
- The filming period took a total of 53 days.
- Having convinced the studio that Royce shouldn't be a brute, Rodriguez found himself with a rich selection of candidates. In particular, Milo Ventimiglia, Freddy Rodriguez, and Josh Brolin competed for the role.
- Jeff Fahey auditioned for the role of Noland before Fishburne.
- Cuchillo – the nickname of Danny Trejo's character – means 'knife' in Spanish.
- Taktarov’s character is introduced at the beginning of the film as “Major Sarov” (Sarov (Arzamas-16) is the city where Oleg Taktarov was born).
- Adrien Brody gained 11 kilograms of muscle mass to prepare for the role.
- Filming scenes with Laurence Fishburne took only two days.
- The character Hanzo's name is a reference to Hattori Hanzo, a legendary samurai from the Sengoku period.
- Before his death, Nikolai Sarov repeats the line from the movie Predator, "You're an ugly motherfucker," spoken by Arnold Schwarzenegger's character.
- The fact that Alice Braga is Latina can be seen as continuity and a good tradition. In the first two 'Predators' films, the only female characters were also Latinas.
