Short description

Dr. Jack Gramm is a forensic psychiatrist who teaches at a Seattle university and consults for the FBI, work that has earned him a reputation as a skilled profiler. His testimony helped convict Jon Forster, a serial killer now awaiting execution. As the execution approaches, a young woman is found murdered in a manner that echoes Forster's crimes, and one of Gramm's own students is among the victims. Forster insists he is innocent, and Gramm suspects a copycat is at work. Then he receives a warning: whoever is behind the killings claims he has only 88 minutes left to live. With time running out, Gramm must work out who is threatening him and why before the deadline passes.

Jon Avnet directed the film, his sixth feature after Fried Green Tomatoes, The War, Up Close & Personal, Red Corner and Uprising. Gary Scott Thompson wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Avnet and Randall Emmett. Al Pacino leads as Gramm, with Alicia Witt, Leelee Sobieski, Amy Brenneman, William Forsythe and Deborah Kara Unger in supporting roles. The production was a German, Canadian and American co-financing effort mounted by Nu Image, Millennium Media, TriStar Pictures and Brightlight Pictures.

Made for about 30 million dollars, the film took in roughly 33 million worldwide, a modest return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 80,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.8 from about 1,200 votes, a lukewarm reception from audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Al Pacino was cast in the lead role in mid-May 2005. By that time, director James Foley was already on board the project. During the preliminary work, he left the project, and in July 2005, James was replaced by John Evenett.
  • From the moment Jack Gramm first says he has 88 minutes left to live until the end of the movie, exactly that amount of time passes, including the final credits.
