Constance Reid marries Clifford Chatterley, a British naval lieutenant, in 1917 and becomes Lady Chatterley. He returns from the First World War front paralysed, confined to a wheelchair and unable to continue a physical marriage. The couple settles on the Chatterley estate, where Constance, trapped in duty and monotony, grows withdrawn. With her husband's approval, she begins a relationship with Parkin, the estate's gamekeeper, a connection that awakens her sensuality while returning him to life and its pleasures. Set in an English county after the war, the film adapts D. H. Lawrence's novel Lady Chatterley's Lover.
Pascale Ferran directed and wrote the screenplay with Roger Bohbot. It was her second feature, arriving after her 1994 film Coming to Terms and followed years later by 2014's Bird People. Marina Hands plays Constance, opposite Jean-Louis Coulloc'h as Parkin, with Hippolyte Girardot as Clifford, Hélène Alexandridis as Mrs. Bolton, Hélène Fillières as Hilda and Bernard Verley as Constance's father. Gilles Sandoz produced the Belgian, British and French co-production, which runs 167 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds 6.7/10 from around 4,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2/10 from 118 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8/10 from 86 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores, suggesting reviewers responded more favourably than general viewers. Its worldwide box office of about 3 million dollars indicates a limited theatrical reach for this literary adaptation.
