Born in China

Born in China is a Disneynature documentary that follows three animal families across the varied landscapes of China. A giant panda mother raises her cub as it begins to assert its independence, a two-year-old golden snub-nosed monkey feels pushed aside after the arrival of a younger sister and joins a group of outcast monkeys, and a snow leopard mother struggles to bring up her two cubs in one of the harshest environments on the planet. The film moves between mountain, forest and bamboo habitat to show these animals in the wild.

The film was directed by Lu Chuan, who wrote the screenplay with Phil Chapman and Brian Leith; Chapman and Leith produced alongside Roy Conli. It followed several features in Lu Chuan's career, including City of Life and Death, Beginning of the Great Revival and Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe, and came after Mountain Patrol and The Missing Gun on his wider filmography. John Krasinski narrates the American version, while Zhou Xun provides narration for the Chinese release. Running 76 minutes, the film earned a 7.2 rating on IMDb from around 4,300 votes and a 7.3 on TMDB from roughly 174 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6.9 from 46 reviews. Audience scores on both platforms sit close to the critics' score, indicating a generally favorable reception.
