Short description
Ned Fleming is an overprotective father and small-town businessman who takes his family to visit his daughter Stephanie at Stanford over the holidays. There he meets her boyfriend Laird Mayhew, a young internet billionaire whose wealth and unconventional, socially awkward manner are far removed from Ned's world. Ned immediately takes against him, and the two men begin competing for Stephanie's attention as the visit turns into an awkward clash of values and temperaments.
John Hamburg directed and co-wrote the film with Nicholas Stoller and Ian Helfer; Ben Stiller, Shawn Levy and Jonah Hill produced it. It is the fourth of Hamburg's six features to date, arriving between I Love You, Man in 2009 and Me Time in 2022. Bryan Cranston plays Ned, James Franco plays Laird, and Zoey Deutch, Megan Mullally, Griffin Gluck and Keegan-Michael Key round out the main cast, part of a credited company of 57 performers and 55 crew members. Released in December 2016, it cost about 38 million dollars and took roughly 118 million worldwide, a solid return on a mid-budget comedy.
On IMDb it holds 6.2 from around 135,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 from 4,486. The film critics' rating of 5 out of 10, drawn from 154 reviews, sits somewhat below both audience figures.

- John Hamburg, who directed the film, taught James Franco at New York University.
- In one episode, the Fleming family drives past a sign for Palo Alto. Palo Alto is a city in California where James Franco was born and raised. He plays Laird, to whom the Flemings are heading.
- During a party, Burnie Burns, a YouTuber and one of the founders of Rooster Teeth Productions (a production company specializing in the production and release of entertainment web content), appears on screen.
- The "Monkey Killers" app, developed by Laird, played by James Franco, is available in the iPhone App Store.
- A Norse rune meaning 'creation' is tattooed on Laird's right hand. The rune near the wrist of his left hand means 'youth'.
- James Franco plays the role of Laird Mayhew, whose surname is borrowed from the series "Breaking Bad" (2008-2013), starring Bryan Cranston.
- The name Gustav of Keegan-Michael Key's character is borrowed from Gustavo Fring, a character from "Breaking Bad" who was the enemy of Walter White, the main character played by Bryan Cranston.
- Some of the paintings in the house of the character played by James Franco are works by the actor himself.
- As Megan Mullally later recounted, the actors were given complete freedom of action on set. Director John Hamburg encouraged improvisation in every way. As a result, 240 hours of footage were filmed, which then had to be cut down to just 111 minutes.
- The bedroom scenes featuring Megan Mullally and Bryan Cranston were not in the original plot. Mullally was the one who suggested including them in the film.
