The Bat

Mystery novelist Cornelia van Gorder rents a country house called The Oaks to work on her next book, but the house has a recent and bloody history: a masked killer known as The Bat once struck there. The property's owner, bank president John Fleming, has embezzled a million dollars in securities and hidden them somewhere inside, and he is killed before he can recover them. As word of the missing funds spreads and suspicion falls on bank staff, several parties converge on The Oaks searching for the loot, while the killer returns to the house.

The film was directed by Crane Wilbur, who also wrote the screenplay, and produced by C.J. Tevlin for Liberty Pictures. Agnes Moorehead plays Cornelia, with Vincent Price as Dr. Malcolm Wells, Gavin Gordon as Lieutenant Andy Anderson, John Sutton as the chauffeur Warner, Lenita Lane as Lizzie Allen and Elaine Edwards as Dale Bailey. It runs 80 minutes and belongs to the crime, horror, mystery and thriller genres.

Released in August 1959, the film holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 7,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 from roughly 140 votes. The two are close, suggesting a modest but steady response from viewers rather than a sharply divided one.
