Louis Theroux, the British documentary maker, turns his attention to the Church of Scientology in this 2016 film. Denied entry to the Church's headquarters, he partners with Marty Rathbun, a former senior official of the organisation, and other ex-members to stage reconstructions of incidents they say they experienced inside it. Actors are used to portray figures including David Miscavige, and the filming methods draw on techniques associated with the Church itself. The project takes an unexpected turn as it becomes apparent that the Church is also turning its cameras on Theroux.
John Dower directs and shares writing duties with Theroux. Dower's other directing credit is The Balloonists. Simon Chinn produces for Red Box Films, with BBC Film among the production companies behind this British and American documentary. Alongside Theroux, Rathbun and the former members Tom De Vocht, Jefferson Hawkins and Marc Headley appear as themselves, while Andrew Perez plays Miscavige. The film runs 99 minutes.
Released in May 2016, the documentary drew a modest but consistent response. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from around 14,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.6, from roughly 309 votes. The two sets of viewers agree closely, suggesting the film was received about the same way by the large and small audiences that rated it.
