Bajirao Mastani
Short description
Bajirao Mastani is a historical drama set in eighteenth-century India. Bajirao, a Maratha general who rises to become Peshwa, is married to Kashibai. On a military campaign he meets Mastani, a warrior princess seeking help against invaders threatening her homeland. Impressed by her courage, he fights alongside her and they fall in love, but their relationship collides with his family's expectations and the religious and social codes of the time, since Mastani is Muslim and he already has a wife. Kashibai and Bajirao's mother are among those who oppose the union.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed and produced the film, his fifth feature after Devdas, Black, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and before Padmaavat, Gangubai Kathiawadi and Love and War. Prakash R. Kapadia wrote the screenplay, and Kishore Lulla co-produced. Ranveer Singh plays Bajirao, with Deepika Padukone as Mastani and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Kashibai; Tanvi Azmi, Vaibhav Tatwawadi and Mahesh Manjrekar appear in supporting roles.
Released in December 2015 and running 158 minutes, the film drew a large audience. On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from roughly 42,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 from about 321 votes, while a critics' rating of 6.1 from eighteen reviews sits below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The war scene involved 800 extras, 500 horses, and 25 elephants. It took 20 days to film near Jaipur.
- The screenplay was written 12 years before work began on the film, so, taking into account the preferences of the modern audience, certain changes were made – it was made shorter and more dynamic.
- Rehearsals for the dance scene to the song “Pinga” took several days.
- 22 sets were constructed.
