Short description

Set during and after the Spanish-American War, the story follows a group of primarily Black soldiers who leave the army with a stash of gold. Led by a skilled marksman named Jessie Lee, the group travels west to pursue the people responsible for the lynching of Lee's father. Along the way, they are hunted by their former commander, Colonel Graham, a greedy and sadistic man. The plot is framed as a legend told by an older man to a street child in a Los Angeles ghetto.

Directed by Mario Van Peebles, this film followed his 1991 project New Jack City. Van Peebles also stars as the lead character, Jesse Lee, alongside Stephen Baldwin, Tommy Lister Jr., Big Daddy Kane, Billy Zane, and Pam Grier. Produced by Working Title Films and PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, the movie was a joint production between the United Kingdom and the United States.

The film had a budget of 4 million USD and earned 20 million USD at the worldwide box office. On TMDB, it holds a rating of 5.5/10 based on 95 votes. This audience score is slightly higher than the rating from film critics, which stands at 5.1/10 from 18 reviews.
