Short description
The Disaster Artist follows Greg Sestero, a young actor in Los Angeles, whose life changes when he meets Tommy Wiseau in an acting class. The two form an unlikely friendship built on a shared love of acting and a shared ambition to make it in Hollywood. When the industry rejects them, Tommy decides to write, direct, produce and star in his own film, and Greg joins him on a production that becomes The Room, a 2003 release that drew attention for reasons no one involved had planned.
James Franco directed the film and plays Tommy, with Dave Franco as Greg and Seth Rogen as script supervisor Sandy Schklair. Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber wrote the screenplay, and Franco produced alongside Rogen and Evan Goldberg. It is based on Greg Sestero's book about making The Room.
The film sits in the middle of a run of directing credits for Franco that began with Good Time Max in 2008 and includes As I Lay Dying, In Dubious Battle and The Institute. Made for about 10 million dollars, it took roughly 30 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.3 from around 171,000 votes, on TMDB 7.1 from under 4,000, and critics gave it 7.8 from 347 reviews.
