Tickled follows New Zealand journalist David Farrier, who comes across videos of an unusual competitive activity online: organized tickling matches between young men. When he approaches the company behind the clips with questions, he receives threats and mockery instead of answers, and the hostility only sharpens his interest. What begins as a light curiosity develops into a much darker investigation, as Farrier and co-director Dylan Reeve trace the operation behind the videos and the people caught up in it.
The documentary was released in 2016 and runs 92 minutes. Farrier and Reeve direct and also appear on screen as themselves, alongside participants including David Starr, Hal Karp, Marko Realmonte and Kevin Clarke; Carthew Neal produces. It was made in New Zealand by Horseshoe Films, A Ticklish Tale and Fumes Production.
Audience response has been solid, with a rating of 7.4 from around 23,000 votes on IMDb and 7.2 from roughly 447 votes on TMDB. A critics' rating of 7.6 from 119 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores, indicating that reviewers responded at least as warmly as general viewers to this investigative documentary.
