Monte Walsh and Chet Rollins are cowboys who have spent their lives doing ranch work, rarely anything that cannot be done from horseback. Their time is split between long months on the range and occasional visits to town, where Monte keeps up a long-standing relationship with Martine, a prostitute, and Chet becomes involved with the widow who runs the hardware store. Their routine holds until a younger hand is let go and turns to cattle rustling and killing, forcing both men to confront how much the world around them is changing as the frontier era closes.
Set in Wyoming in 1892, the film was directed by Simon Wincer, the thirteenth of thirteen films he directed in chronological order, following Young Black Stallion. Tom Selleck plays Monte, with Isabella Rossellini as Martine, Keith Carradine as Chet and George Eads as Shorty Austin; the credited cast runs to thirty names, among them Robert Carradine and Barry Corbin. It was produced by Steven J. Brandman for television.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.1 from roughly 3,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from a much smaller base of 47 votes. The two figures point to a modest but durable following rather than broad acclaim.
