A Summer's Tale

Gaspard, a young mathematics graduate, spends his summer holiday in the Breton seaside town of Dinard before starting his first job. He is waiting for Léna, the young woman he hopes to see, but while he waits he strikes up a friendship with Margot, a waitress who studies ethnology. Through Margot he meets Solène, and his feelings become divided among the three women as Léna's arrival approaches.

Éric Rohmer wrote and directed this thirteenth-to-last entry in his filmography, the twelfth of the thirteen features he directed in chronological order. It follows A Tale of Winter and precedes An Autumn Tale, forming part of a loose series of seasonal tales. Melvil Poupaud plays Gaspard, with Amanda Langlet, Gwenaëlle Simon and Aurelia Nolin as the three women around him. Margaret Ménégoz and Françoise Etchegaray produced the film, which runs 114 minutes.

On TMDB the film holds a rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 279 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 8.1 out of 10 from 49 reviews, a noticeably warmer response from reviewers than from the wider audience. Made in France and released in June 1996, it belongs to the director's late period of comedies and dramas about the uncertainties of love and choice.
