Set in postwar southern France, From the Land of the Moon follows Gabrielle, a young woman whose belief in overwhelming, all-consuming love sets her at odds with her surroundings. Her parents marry her off to José, a seasonal worker they hope will make her respectable, but the union feels like a kind of burial to her. Sent to a spa town in the Alps to treat kidney stones, she meets André Sauvage, a lieutenant wounded in the Indochina War, and becomes convinced the two of them can escape together toward the life she has imagined.
Nicole Garcia directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jacques Fieschi, adapting Milena Agus's novel. The film sits between her earlier Place Vendôme and her later Lovers in her work as a director. Marion Cotillard plays Gabrielle, with Louis Garrel as André, Àlex Brendemühl as José, and supporting turns from Brigitte Roüan, Victoire Du Bois and Aloïse Sauvage. Alain Attal produced the Belgian-French co-production, made for about 10 million dollars, and the cast runs to 39 credited performers.
The reception in France was muted: critics rated it 4.7 out of 10 across 57 reviews, while on TMDB it holds 6.6 out of 10 from 318 votes, suggesting audiences responded more warmly than reviewers did.
