Weiner is a documentary about Anthony Weiner, the former Democratic congressman from New York who resigned in 2011 after a sexting scandal. In 2013 he attempted a political comeback by running for mayor of New York City, and the film follows that campaign from the inside, with extensive access to Weiner, his staff and his family. The directors Elyse Steinberg and Josh Kriegman, who also produced the film, chart how the run gains attention and then unravels when further revelations about his private messages emerge, turning the campaign into a public spectacle that overshadows his message. The film observes the candidate, his advisers and his wife, Huma Abedin, as the scrutiny intensifies.
Steinberg and Kriegman made the film as their first feature together. The cast consists of the participants playing themselves, including Weiner and Abedin, along with advisers such as Amit Bagga and other figures from the campaign. The film runs 96 minutes.
Released in 2016, Weiner drew a worldwide box office of about 2 million dollars, a modest figure for a documentary that nonetheless reached a wide audience. On IMDb it holds a 7.6 rating from around 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.3 from roughly 200 votes. A critics' rating of 8.3 from 176 reviews places it above both audience scores, indicating stronger approval from reviewers than from the general public.
