The Tourist

Frank Tupelo, an American tourist, travels to Italy to recover from a breakup. On the train to Venice he meets Elise, a striking and mysterious British woman who approaches him deliberately. Their meeting looks like the start of a romance, but Frank soon finds himself caught up in intrigue and danger, with pursuers on his trail. The film is a thriller with romantic elements set largely in Venice.

The Tourist was directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who wrote the screenplay with Christopher McQuarrie and Julian Fellowes. It followed his 2006 debut, The Lives of Others, and preceded Never Look Away in 2018. Johnny Depp plays Frank and Angelina Jolie plays Elise, with Paul Bettany, Timothy Dalton, Steven Berkoff and Rufus Sewell among the supporting cast. Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Graham King produced, and the film was made by Columbia Pictures, StudioCanal, Spyglass Entertainment and GK Films.

Released in December 2010, the film runs 103 minutes and carries a budget of 100 million dollars, against which its worldwide gross of 278 million dollars represents a solid return. Audience responses were moderate: it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 268,000 votes and 6.2 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 5,863 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from 171 reviews is markedly lower than those audience scores.
