Frankie and Johnny

Frankie and Johnny is a 1991 romantic drama about a man starting over after prison. Johnny, who served time for forgery, finds work as a cook in a New York diner. There he meets Frankie, a waitress wary of romance after being hurt in the past. Johnny is drawn to her, though he first becomes involved with another waitress, Cora. Frankie keeps her distance at first, and it takes encouragement from her friend Tim before she considers giving Johnny a chance. The film follows the cautious, uneven beginnings of their relationship against the everyday life of the restaurant where they both work.

Garry Marshall directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Terrence McNally. It was Marshall's seventh film as director, arriving after Pretty Woman and followed later by Exit to Eden. Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer lead the cast as Johnny and Frankie, with Héctor Elizondo as the diner's owner, Nathan Lane as Tim, Kate Nelligan as Cora and Jane Morris as Nedda, among a credited cast of 78. The production had a budget of about 29 million US dollars and took roughly 23 million dollars worldwide.
