Sidney and Dre have been close since childhood, when they watched hip-hop take shape on a New York street corner. That shared moment set both of them on their paths. Years later, Sidney has become a respected music journalist, while Dre works as a successful but dissatisfied executive at a hip-hop record label. Their friendship is tested when Dre decides to get married, prompting Sidney to confront feelings she had kept to herself, and both begin to reconsider what they want from their lives and careers.

Brown Sugar was directed by Rick Famuyiwa, his second feature after The Wood, from a screenplay he wrote with Michael Elliot. Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs lead the cast as Sidney and Dre, with Yasiin Bey, Nicole Ari Parker, Boris Kodjoe and Queen Latifah in supporting roles. The production, backed by Fox Searchlight and 20th Century Fox, cost about 8 million dollars and took roughly 27 million dollars worldwide.
