Muthu Pandi is a powerful man in his village who has decided he will marry Dhanalakshmi, and he sets about removing anyone who stands in the way of the match, beginning with her two brothers. Frightened and with no one left to turn to, Dhanalakshmi flees the village. On the road she is helped without realising it by Velu, a university student and Kabaddi player who happens to be travelling to Madurai for a match with his team, and who finds himself drawn into her escape. The chase that follows sets the young athlete against a ruthless and well-connected adversary.
Ghilli is a 2004 Indian action comedy directed by Dharani, who also wrote the screenplay; it was produced by A. M. Rathnam under Sri Surya Movies and was Dharani's second film, after Dhool in 2003. Vijay plays Velu, with Trisha Krishnan as Dhanalakshmi and Prakash Raj as Muthupandi; Ashish Vidhyarthi, Janaki Sabesh and Nancy Jennifer appear in supporting roles. Made on a budget of about 20 million dollars, it runs 168 minutes.
Audience response has been strong. On IMDb it holds 8.2 out of 10 from roughly 19,000 votes, while on TMDB it averages 7.1 out of 10 from about 75 votes. The much larger and higher-scoring IMDb sample points to a film with a durable following among viewers.
