Sadako vs. Kayako brings together two of Japanese horror's best-known vengeful spirits. A university student, Yuri Kurahashi, watches a cursed videotape with a friend, drawing the attention of Sadako Yamamura. Around the same time, a teenage girl named Suzuka Takagi enters an abandoned house across from her home while looking into children who have gone missing, and thereby encounters Kayako Saeki. When these separate threads converge, the two ghosts are set on a collision course. The film draws on the mythology of both the Ring and The Grudge series.
Koji Shiraishi directed and wrote the screenplay. It is the sixth of thirteen features he has directed in the order given, following Mystery Man and preceding Simokita 2014. The cast includes Mizuki Yamamoto as Yuri Kurahashi, Aimi Satsukawa as Natsumi Ueno, 玉城蒂娜 as Suzuka Takagi, Elly Nanami as Sadako Yamamura, Runa Endo as Kayako Saeki and Rintaro Shibamoto as Toshio Saeki.
The film was released in June 2016 and runs 98 minutes. It took about 9 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 254 votes, while a critics' score of 5.5 out of 10 comes from 22 reviews, so the two measures sit close together.
