Leo Borlock is a shy student at Mica High School in Arizona who has always preferred to stay in the background. His routine is upended by the arrival of Susan Caraway, who calls herself Stargirl: a newcomer who plays the ukulele, dresses brightly and behaves with a freedom nobody at the school is used to. Her oddness draws both admiration and ridicule from the other students, and Leo finds himself increasingly fascinated by her, struggling with feelings he is reluctant to admit while the school's opinion of her shifts back and forth.
The film is based on Jerry Spinelli's novel and was directed by Julia Hart, who wrote the screenplay with Kristin Hahn and Jordan Horowitz. It is the third feature Hart directed, following Miss Stevens and Fast Color, and it came out the same year as her next film, I'm Your Woman; she later returned to the characters with Hollywood Stargirl. Grace VanderWaal plays Stargirl and Graham Verchere plays Leo, with Karan Brar, Maximiliano Hernández, Darby Stanchfield and Giancarlo Esposito in supporting roles.
Stargirl runs 107 minutes and was released in March 2020. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from around 6,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.4 from roughly 576 votes.
