The Poughkeepsie Tapes is a 2007 American crime horror film written and directed by John Erick Dowdle and produced by Drew Dowdle. Hundreds of videotapes are discovered in an abandoned house in New York State, recording acts of torture, murder and dismemberment carried out over roughly a decade. Detectives use the footage in an attempt to identify the victims and the person responsible, while the sheer volume of material and its effect on those who watch it complicate the investigation. The story is presented as a compilation of that recovered footage together with police and documentary material.
The film was Dowdle's first feature as director, made before Quarantine, Devil, As Above, So Below and No Escape, and it shares its found-footage approach with some of the later work. The cast includes Stacy Chbosky, Ben Messmer, Lou George, Ivar Brogger, Michael Lawson and Amy Lyndon, with 59 credited cast members and 141 credited crew members listed.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from around 31,000 votes, while on TMDB it is rated 6.5 out of 10 from 813 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 rests on six reviews. The audience scores are moderate, with the larger IMDb sample and the smaller TMDB sample landing close together, and the vote counts suggest the film found a wider viewership on IMDb than on TMDB.
