Hostiles

In 1892, a veteran U.S. Army captain named Joseph J. Blocker is ordered to escort a dying Cheyenne chief, Yellow Hawk, and his family from a New Mexico fort back to their tribal lands in Montana. Blocker has spent years fighting Native Americans and accepts the assignment only reluctantly. Along the way the group encounters Rosalee Quaid, a widow whose family was killed by Comanches, who joins the journey. Crossing hard country where hostile bands and outlaws pose constant danger, the soldiers and their charges must learn to rely on one another to survive.

Scott Cooper wrote and directed the film, his fourth feature after Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace and Black Mass, and he produced it with Ken Kao and John Lesher. Christian Bale leads as Blocker, with Rosamund Pike as Rosalee and Wes Studi as Yellow Hawk; Jesse Plemons, Adam Beach and Rory Cochrane appear in supporting roles.

Released in December 2017, the western drama runs 134 minutes. It was made for a budget of 55 million dollars and took in about 36 million worldwide, so it did not recover its costs at the box office. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 107,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from roughly 2,600 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 225 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
