Short description

Patriots Day dramatizes the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the manhunt that followed. A police sergeant played by Mark Wahlberg, whose wife narrowly escapes the blasts near the finish line, works alongside survivors, emergency workers and federal investigators as the city tries to identify those responsible and prevent further attacks. The investigation brings together Commissioner Ed Davis, FBI agent Richard DesLauriers and Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese, among others, in a fast-moving pursuit across the Boston area.

Peter Berg directed and co-wrote the film with Joshua Zetumer and Matt Cook. It is the eighth of the thirteen features Berg has directed, arriving between Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon. Mark Wahlberg, who also produced, heads a large credited cast of fifty-three that includes John Goodman, J.K. Simmons, Kevin Bacon, Michelle Monaghan and Alex Wolff. The film cost about 45 million dollars and took in roughly 52 million worldwide.

On IMDb, viewers rate it 7.3 out of 10 from 122,000 votes, while on TMDB it holds 7.1 out of 10 from 2,925 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 237 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores. The film mixes action and crime drama with historical reconstruction, running 133 minutes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Dartmouth College in Massachusetts, which Jokhar Tsarnaev attended at the time of the tragedy, did not grant permission for the filmmakers to shoot scenes of the film on the university campus.
  • The scene of the capture and arrest of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was filmed on the second anniversary of his actual capture and arrest.
  • The photograph of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s body, shown by Katherine Russell, is a genuine photograph taken by an investigator, which was later released to the public.
