Possible Worlds is a Canadian mystery and science-fiction film about George Barber, a man who inhabits several parallel lives at once. In each of these worlds he is the same person, while the woman he seeks, Joyce, appears with a different identity and profession every time. George moves among these overlapping realities, trying to hold on to a lasting connection with her. Meanwhile, in the material world, two detectives, Berkley and Williams, are called to George's apartment, where his body has been found and his brain removed. Their investigation of the murder gradually draws them toward the same shifting realities George occupies.
The film was directed by Robert Lepage, who wrote the screenplay with John Mighton, and was produced by Bruno Jobin and Sandra Cunningham. Tilda Swinton plays Joyce opposite Tom McCamus as George Barber, with Sean McCann as Inspector Berkley, Gabriel Gascon as Kleber, Rick Miller as William and Griffith Brewer as Caretaker. It runs 93 minutes and was released in September 2000.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.6 from roughly 2,200 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from a much smaller base of 46 votes. The two figures are close, though the larger vote count on IMDb gives that rating more weight than the modest sampling behind the TMDB score.
