Short description

Set in Baltimore, this thriller follows Terry Lambert, who is having an affair with Sylvia, the wife of his employer. When Sylvia witnesses an attack on a woman from Terry's bedroom window, she refuses to testify to avoid a public scandal. To protect her, Terry pretends he saw the event, but his false testimony leads the police to suspect him of a series of murders. To clear his name, Terry begins his own investigation with the help of the attack victim, Denise.

The film was written and directed by Curtis Hanson, marking the second of 13 films he directed, following Losin' It and preceding Evil Town. The cast features Steve Guttenberg as Terry Lambert, alongside Isabelle Huppert, Elizabeth McGovern, Paul Shenar, Carl Lumbly, and Wallace Shawn. Produced by Martha De Laurentiis through DEG, the movie had a budget of 8 million USD and earned 13 million USD at the worldwide box office.

The film has received a rating of 6.3/10 on TMDB based on 146 votes. Film critics provided a similar assessment, with a rating of 6.3/10 from 32 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Production costs were low because the movie was filmed not in Hollywood, but in the states of Maryland and North Carolina.
  • The theater scene was filmed at a performing arts center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. During filming, the audience members had to remain in their seats for many hours.
  • In 1987, director and screenwriter Curtis Hanson admitted that the films of Alfred Hitchcock had a significant influence on him while working on the movie. Hanson described the project itself as a tribute to the legendary director.
  • For the role of Sylvia, played by Isabelle Huppert, director and screenwriter Curtis Hanson initially wanted to find an American actress. However, he ultimately cast Huppert to emphasize the contrast between her and the character played by Elizabeth McGovern.
  • The waitress Denise, played by Elizabeth McGovern, did not exist in Ann Holden's novel (which served as the literary basis for the screenplay). She was created by director and screenwriter Curtis Hanson.
  • According to Steve Guttenberg, Martha De Laurentiis wanted to cast him as Terry specifically because audiences could not imagine him in that role. Director and screenwriter Curtis Hanson also didn't initially see Guttenberg in the part, but he soon changed his mind and agreed that he was the right choice for the lead role.
  • According to Steve Gutenberg, who played Terry Lambert, producer Martha De Laurentiis fired the cinematographers during the very first week of filming for their lack of Italian language skills and replaced them with Italian speakers. Shortly thereafter, director and screenwriter Curtis Hanson insisted on replacing the Italian cinematographer with Gilbert Taylor.
