Ashes in the Snow
Short description
Set in 1941, this drama follows Lina Vilkas, a teenage girl and aspiring artist who is deported from Lithuania to Siberia during the Stalinist era. Along with her family, she faces the brutality of forced labor, hunger, and disease. To cope with the harsh conditions and the surrounding terror, Lina uses her art to secretly document the experiences of herself and other prisoners.
The film was directed by Marius Markevicius and written by Ben York Jones. It is a joint production between Lithuania and the United States, created by Tauras Films and Sorrento Productions. The cast features Bel Powley as the protagonist, alongside Lisa Loven Kongsli, Martin Wallström, Jonah Hauer-King, Peter Franzén, and Sam Hazeldine. A total of 58 actors were credited in the production, supported by a crew of 71.
As a released work, the movie has received a moderate reception from viewers. It holds a rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb based on 7,400 votes, while on TMDB it has a slightly lower score of 6.4/10 from 133 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Over 700 extras participated in the deportation scene – many of whom had actually been subjected to deportation themselves.
- Filming took place from January to April 2016, but it was released in limited release in the U.S. only in January 2019.
- To avoid confusion with the film "Fifty Shades of Grey", screenwriter Ben York Jones suggested changing the original title "Between Shades of Gray" to "Ashes in the Snow", striving to preserve the essence and meaning.
