Pillars of the Sky is a 1956 American Western set in the Oregon Country of the 1860s. First Sergeant Emmett Bell leads the Native American police tasked with keeping order on reservation land granted to the tribes after a peace treaty. That balance is threatened when the U.S. Cavalry moves to build a road and a fort across the territory, pushing several tribes toward open war and forcing Bell to weigh his duty against the people he has come to know. George Marshall directed the film from a screenplay by Sam Rolfe, with Robert Arthur producing for Universal International Pictures. Jeff Chandler stars as Bell, alongside Dorothy Malone, Ward Bond, Keith Andes, Lee Marvin and Sydney Chaplin among a credited cast of 26. It runs 95 minutes.
The film sits in the middle of a busy stretch for Marshall, who directed 13 features in all; it followed Destry and preceded The Gazebo, and it belongs to Chandler's run of Westerns at Universal in the mid-1950s. It opened on September 14, 1956 and took in around 2 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from 861 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.5 from 17 votes.
