Man Trouble stars Jack Nicholson as Harry Bliss, a dog trainer who also works as a con man. When his finances and his personal life are falling apart, he meets Joan Spruance, an opera singer who hires him to provide her with a guard dog. What Joan does not know is that Harry has been pressured into getting close to her in order to steal a manuscript she owns. The relationship between the two develops even as Harry hides both his real identity and his assignment from her.
The film was directed by Bob Rafelson from a screenplay by Carole Eastman, who also produced with Bruce Gilbert. It is the sixth of the seven features Rafelson directed, arriving between Black Widow and No Good Deed and marking the second time he worked with Nicholson after Five Easy Pieces. Ellen Barkin plays Joan, with supporting turns from Harry Dean Stanton, Beverly D'Angelo, Michael McKean and Saul Rubinek among a credited cast of 44.
Made for about 30 million dollars, the film returned roughly 4 million worldwide at the box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.7 from around 3,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 4.9 from about 70 votes. A critics' rating of 3.8 from 30 reviews places it below the audience scores. Set in Los Angeles and released in July 1992, it runs 100 minutes.
