Three adult siblings reunite in New York for an event honoring the career of their father, a sculptor and art professor. Danny, Matthew and Jean have spent years in an uneasy orbit around Harold, whose difficult temperament and self-absorption have shaped how they see themselves and each other. The reunion forces them to work through old resentments and rivalries even as they deal with the practicalities of the retrospective and with their own complicated feelings toward the man at the center of it.
Noah Baumbach wrote, directed and produced the film, the tenth of the fourteen features he has made in chronological order, arriving between De Palma and Marriage Story. Adam Sandler plays Danny, Ben Stiller plays Matthew and Dustin Hoffman plays Harold, with Emma Thompson, Elizabeth Marvel and Grace Van Patten in supporting roles. The production had a budget of about 11 million dollars and a credited cast of 49 and crew of 99.
The film earned a critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 189 reviews, noticeably higher than its audience scores of 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb from more than 53,000 votes and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from around 1,300 votes. Released in October 2017, it runs 112 minutes and mixes comedy and drama.
